About

Cogvia is a free, growing side project built to help language learners pick up rare words, phrasal verbs, and idioms from movies and TV shows before they watch - so unfamiliar dialogue doesn't break the flow. It's also my way of launching my first project.

Where the idea came from

If you like watching movies and shows in the original language to improve your listening, you know how annoying it is to keep pausing just to look up a word you can't guess from context. Some apps make this a bit easier with dual subtitles and similar tricks, but that never felt quite right to me either - and if you're at the cinema or watching with friends, it simply isn't an option.

So I landed on a different approach: look up the hard or rare words, idioms, and interesting phrases from a movie beforehand, so that by the time you actually hear them, you already know them and just reinforce what you've learned. The only question was where to find that vocabulary ahead of time - which is exactly what this site is for.

I tried it myself, and on friends - everyone says it genuinely helps. I don't know yet where this project will go, but I want to at least keep it public and keep improving it for as long as I can.
