Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 27, 2026 · English only for now
This Privacy Policy explains what data Cogvia collects, why, and how it’s handled. Cogvia is a free, independently-run side project — not (yet) a registered company — but we still take your data seriously.
1. Data We Collect
Account data: your email address; a hashed (never plain-text) password, if you sign up with email/password; your name and profile picture, if you sign in with Google; your Telegram ID, username and photo, if you sign in with Telegram.
Learning data: your saved library (movies/shows you’ve added, and your favorites); your personal dictionary/vocabulary progress (which words, phrases and idioms you’ve learned, per language you’re learning); your app settings (e.g. your chosen learning language).
We do not run analytics or advertising trackers — Cogvia has no Google Analytics, ad pixels, or similar tracking, and we don’t sell or rent your data to anyone.
2. Data Kept Only On Your Device
Some things — your recently viewed titles, recent searches, and whether you’ve dismissed the “install app” prompt — are stored in your browser’s local storage, on your own device. We never see or receive this information; it’s not sent to our servers.
3. Cookies
We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies (to keep you signed in and remember your chosen language). See our Cookie Policy for details — there’s nothing to opt into or out of, since we don’t use tracking or advertising cookies.
4. How We Use Your Data
To run your account (sign-in, keeping your library and vocabulary progress in sync across sessions); to send account-related emails (activation links, password resets) via our email provider; to respond if you contact us for support.
5. Who We Share Data With
We share your data with one third party: Brevo, which sends our transactional emails (account activation, password resets) on our behalf — your email address and the email content pass through it.
That’s it. Cogvia depends on other services to work (movie data, subtitle search, AI-based word analysis, sign-in with Google or Telegram — see Terms of Service for the full list), but none of them receive your personal account information: they only ever see things like subtitle text or a movie/show ID, with no email, name, or account ID attached.
6. Data Retention & Deletion
We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account exists. Cogvia doesn’t yet have a self-service “delete my account” button (it’s an MVP) — to request deletion or a copy of your data, email [email protected] and we’ll handle it manually.
7. Security
Passwords are hashed with bcrypt and never stored in plain text; sessions use signed JWTs. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.
8. Your Rights
Wherever you’re located, you can ask us ([email protected]) to: see what data we hold about you; correct it; delete your account and associated data; or export it. If you’re in the EU/EEA or UK, these map to your GDPR rights of access, rectification, erasure and portability — we’ll honor equivalent requests for anyone, regardless of location.
9. Children
Cogvia isn’t intended for children under 16 (see Terms of Service, Section 3) — among other reasons, because the subtitle content it surfaces is unfiltered and can include mature themes.
10. International Data Transfers
Because we rely on third-party providers (see Section 5), your data may be processed in countries other than your own, including the United States and the EU, depending on where each provider operates.
11. Changes to This Policy
We’ll update the “Last updated” date above whenever this policy changes, and post the new version here.
