Terms of Service

These Terms apply when you access or use Cogvia (the “Service”).

1. What Cogvia Is

Cogvia is a free, independently-run side project (a “pet project”) built to help people learn vocabulary, phrasal verbs and idioms from real movie and TV subtitles. It is not a registered company and isn’t operated as a commercial business at this stage — it’s a portfolio/learning project that may grow into something more formal over time. These Terms may be updated if that happens.

2. Acceptance

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.

3. Who Can Use It

Cogvia is intended for users aged 16 and older. The vocabulary content is drawn from real, unedited movie and TV subtitles — we don’t filter, censor, or rate this material, so it may contain profanity, violence, sexual content, or other mature themes exactly as they appear in the original film or show. Use your own judgment about what’s appropriate for you.

4. Your Account

You may sign up with an email and password, or sign in with Google or Telegram. You’re responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for anything that happens through your account. Let us know if you think someone else has access to it.

5. What the Service Does (and Doesn't Do)

Cogvia processes subtitle text to extract and explain rare words, phrasal verbs and idioms for learning purposes. It does not host, stream, or distribute any video or audio content, and it is not a piracy tool. Movie/TV metadata (titles, posters, ratings) comes from The Movie Database (TMDB); subtitle text comes from third-party subtitle providers (see Section 8). We don’t control, and can’t guarantee, the accuracy, completeness, or availability of that third-party content.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to: use the Service for anything illegal; try to bypass rate limits, authentication, or other technical protections; scrape or bulk-extract data beyond normal use; resell or redistribute access to the Service; or use the Service to facilitate copyright infringement (for example, sourcing full subtitle files for unauthorized distribution of the underlying film).

7. Free Service, No Uptime Guarantee

Cogvia is currently free and provided “as is” and “as available.” Since this is an MVP-stage side project, features, data, and even the whole Service may change, break, or be discontinued without notice. We may introduce paid features in the future; if we do, we’ll update these Terms first.

8. Third-Party Services

Cogvia relies on third-party providers to work: TMDB (movie/TV data and images), Wyzie, OpenSubtitles.com and SubDL (subtitle search/download), Google and Telegram (sign-in), Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter and Mistral (AI-based analysis and translation of subtitle text), Brevo (transactional email), and MongoDB Atlas (database hosting). Your use of features that rely on these providers is also subject to their own terms. See our Privacy Policy for what data, if any, is shared with each.

9. Intellectual Property

The Cogvia name, code and design are ours (or used under license). Movie/TV data and subtitle text belong to their respective rights holders (TMDB, the subtitle providers, and ultimately the film/show’s copyright owner) — we don’t claim ownership over it. Your own learning data (your library, your vocabulary progress) is yours; we just store it to run the Service for you.

10. Disclaimer & Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Cogvia and its developer aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service, including from third-party content or providers being wrong, unavailable, or discontinued.

11. Termination

You can stop using the Service and ask us to delete your account at any time (see Privacy Policy). We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. We’ll change the “Last updated” date above when we do; continued use after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

13. Governing Law

Cogvia isn’t currently operated through a registered legal entity, so we’re not naming a specific governing jurisdiction at this stage. This section will be filled in if/when the project is formalized as a registered business.
